Exploring responsible travel practices worldwide

2017: International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development

The United Nations General Assembly, during its 70th session, designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. This declaration represents a unique opportunity to raise awareness among decision-makers in the public and private sectors, and among the general public, about tourism's contribution to sustainable development.

This initiative mobilizes all stakeholders to work together in making tourism a catalyst for positive change. Within the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its associated Sustainable Development Goals, the International Year seeks to advance changes in policy, business practices, and consumer behavior to create a more sustainable tourism sector.

Five Key Focus Areas

Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Growth

Tourism can generate employment and economic opportunities while maintaining environmental and cultural sustainability for future generations.

Social Inclusion, Employment, and Poverty Reduction

Responsible tourism practices create equitable opportunities, improve working conditions in the industry, and help reduce poverty in communities that rely on tourism.

Resource Efficiency, Environmental Protection, and Climate Action

The tourism sector must minimize its environmental footprint, promote conservation of natural resources, and actively participate in combating climate change.

Cultural Values, Diversity, and Heritage Preservation

Tourism provides opportunities to celebrate and protect cultural heritage, support local traditions, and foster understanding between different communities.

Mutual Understanding, Peace, and Security

Cross-cultural travel and exchange builds bridges between nations and communities, promoting dialogue and contributing to global peace and stability.
